My Soccer Stud

Thomas started soccer last week and fully enjoyed it!!  I was a little nervous.  I was entering a world of the unknown.  I've always had friends that played soccer and now friends with kids that played soccer.  I never did.  Sure, I kicked the ball around and maybe played a few games with some friends, but not more than that.  Now as a mom of two boys, I knew the world of soccer and all things sports was waiting for me!!  Now that it has arrived, I'm pretty excited.

It was so much fun (and stressful!) to walk down the shin-guard and sock aisle and see all these options.  I had no idea where to even begin.  Between Thomas and I, we figured it out!  He ended up with shin-guards with the strap (he wanted the ones without and informed me we could just hold it on with string, duct tape or a rubber band!) and some awesome red socks!!  Because I dutifully waited until 30 minutes before the class started to go and buy some (partly because I waited until 2 days before the class started to sign up and the ones from Walmart were horrible!) we were now running late for his first practice.

We arrived to the field with just enough time to figure out how to work the shin-guards and get the socks on and find out his normal shoes would not work and send him out with the team.

He was a little disappointed when he learned in the car that there would be a coach and lessons.  He thought he was just going to the park to kick the ball around with new friends.  Opps!!  Thankfully he is much more resilient than he was even a few months ago and stayed with the coach without complaining.  He seemed hesitant when I first walked away, but by the time I was a few steps away and peeked over my shoulder he was stretching with the coach with a smile on his face.

Soon it was time to kick the ball around!  What a joy it brought to my heart to see him out there having fun and loving it.  He's a hard worker.  He watched the coach, focused on the ball and had a look of determination on his face.  He was going to do this and do it well.

He's in a class of 4/5 year olds and is one of the tallest out there (not by much, they're all within a few inches of each other) and with kids that have played before.  He was able to catch on quickly.  Thankfully, this is a learning group and not competitive.  He's in a class called "Just for Kicks."  Not quite in city league with real uniforms.  We figured it would be a great place for some experience.  I was happy to see that the coaches and the set-up was really organized and very friendly.

But back to class, as you can see they ran around, all with their own ball and practiced kicking across the field.

I got him to look at me for a picture, but seriously got the "why are you bothering me" look!

Here he is with his green shirt.  They split up for the last couple of minutes for a scrimmage against each other.  Doesn't he look cute!!  He even got to play goalie!!

So here he is, my big soccer stud!  All red in the face from some great soccer plays!!
